UOG Crowned as First Champions of Bud Light W2 Soccer

[May 1, 2017 – Harmon, Guam] – The University of Guam Tritons were crowned as first-ever champions of the Bud Light Women’s Soccer League W2 Division with a 2-1 win over the previously undefeated Calvo’s SelectCare/ISC Team Slay in the division final played Sunday at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

The Tritons managed two goals from Elisha Benavente to get past Team Slay keeper Kathryn Castro, who kept four clean sheets in as many matches during the regular season. Team Slay managed to pull back one in the championship match with a strike from Raelene Tajalle, but could not find the equalizer before time expired.

UOG finished the regular season with a 2-2 record, with losses to Team Slay and FC Familia. UOG avenged both losses in the division playoffs, first fending off FC Familia in the semifinals and Team Slay in the final.

In the awards ceremony following the championship match, UOG was awarded the champions trophy and Team Slay received the runner-up trophy. Team Slay’ Kathryn Castro received the division’s Golden Glove award as the division’s top goalkeeper and teammate Brianna Benito accepted the division’s Golden Boot award as the division’s top scorer, with seven goals in four matches, one ahead of teammate Lili Baranda.

Calvo’s SelectCare/ISC Team Slay suffered its first loss, 2-1 to the University of Guam Tritons, in the championship match of the Bud Light Women’s Soccer League W2 Division Sunday evening at the Guam Football Association National Training Center. Elisha Benavente scored both goals for UOG and Raelene Tajalle scored for Team Slay. Despite the loss, Team Slay swept all top individual awards at the awards ceremony held after the match, with Brianna Benito winning the Golden Boot award as the W2 division’s top goal scorer and teammate Kathryn Castro winning the Golden Glove award as the W2 division’s top goalkeeper.
