16 Dec Top 4 Teams Advance to Bank of Guam GFA Cup Semis
[May 14, 2017 – Harmon, Guam] – All attempts at any upset victories in the quarterfinals of the Bank of Guam 10th Annual GFA Cup were averted over the weekend with the tournament’s top four teams advancing to the semifinals set for Friday at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.
No. 1-ranked and defending champions NAPA Rovers blanked their D2 counterparts 5-0 with a hat trick by Ian Mariano and a goal from Logan Dillenburger. The Rovers’ other goal came on a Rovers D2 own goal.
The Rovers are set to face No. 4 Bank of Guam Strykers in the semifinals, scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. Friday. In head-to-head competition from the recently concluded Budweiser Soccer League Premier Division, the Rovers lead the Strykers 3-1.
In the quarterfinals, the Strykers, captained for the night by George Washington High School junior Xavier Naputi, stopped the University of Guam Tritons 3-1 with goals from Scott Spindel, Kyle Halehale, and Lars Peterson. Rafael Sablan scored UOG’s lone goal in the contest. Naputi and older brother Dylan, captain of the Tritons, played on opposing teams in what resulted as the closest match of the tournament’s quarterfinal round.
In the bottom half of the main draw, No. 2 Guam Shipyard advanced to the semifinals with a 9-2 win over Islanders FC. Mark Chargualaf led all scorers with four goals and teammate Donald Weakley contributed a hat trick in the win. Tae Min “Daniel” Kim and Jonathon Cleary also scored for Shipyard.
Brandon Auayan scored for the Islanders in the 16th minute. The Islanders’ other goal came on a Shipyard own goal.
Shipyard is set to face No. 3 Quality Distributors, 8-1 winners over Haya United. Yaw Antwi-Agyei “Nana” led all scorers with four goals and teammate Scott Leon Guerrero scored twice. Quality’s other goal scorers were Jason Kim and Jeremy Boldt, who also spent time as goalkeeper in the match. Seth Surber scored Haya United’s lone goal.
In head-to-head competition from the 2016-2017 Budweiser Soccer League Premier Division, the Shipyard leads Quality 4-0.
