
21 Nov Shipyard Moves to First in Women’s Soccer
Guam Shipyard’s fifth-straight win in the Bud Light Women’s Soccer League catapulted the team to first place moving into the second half of the Spring season beginning Sunday at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.
Shipyard, a team that began its 2014 campaign with a loss via forfeit in January, won its last five matches, with its most recent against Quality Distributors in a 7-5 contest in Week 7.
After Shipyard took a commanding 4-1 lead at the half, Quality attempted a comeback and outscored the current frontrunners 4-3 in the second half, but the effort was not enough for the victory. Destiny Castro and Brianna Benito each scored twice for the winning team. Erica Quichocho, Demi Rose Brennan, and Sherene Roberto also scored for Shipyard.
Kayla Kinney, the league’s current Golden Boot race leader, contributed a hat trick in the loss. April Talledo and Paige Surber also scored for Quality.
The Doosan Lady Crushers are on a four-match win streak after dropping the previously undefeated Lady Rovers 3-1. The Lady Crushers’ single loss this season came against Shipyard Feb. 2, with the team fielding only nine players in the close 3-2 match. Colleen Naden, Katie Mills, and Skyylerblu Johnson scored in the Lady Crushers’ victory over the Lady Rovers. The Lady Crushers, boasting an identical 5-1 win-loss record with Shipyard, is in the second place spot based on the teams’ head-to-head record.
Rhoda Bamba scored the Lady Rovers’ lone goal off an assist from Cheri Stewart. With the loss, the Lady Rovers move down to third place in the standings.
In the day’s other match, Hyundai edged the Paintco Lady Strykers 3-2 to move ahead of its opponent in the league standings. Maranatha Hennegan, Ashley Besagar, and Levana Terlaje each scored once for Hyundai. Yae Kawauchi and Krystiana Martinez scored for the Lady Strykers.
The league’s other team, Pika Soccer Club, received a bye in Week 7.
