03 Jan Season Finale Set for Women’s Intermediate Soccer
[March 25, 2015 – Harmon, Guam] – For some of the players in the Guam Football Association Women’s Intermediate 7-A-Side Recreational League, the 2015 spring season’s final week of matches on Sunday isn’t an end, but the beginning for the next season’s preparations.
“Though the season ends Sunday, it’s not really an end for us – we’ll still do co-ed futsal on Wednesday nights at the Agat gym and we’ll still continue practicing with our Queen Cobras moms team to help them prepare for their upcoming league – I’m excited to ‘begin’ again,” said Queen Cobras intermediate team goalkeeper Janice Piolo. “I’ve only been playing soccer for about two to three years – I joined University of Guam’s team when they entered teams in the Bud Light Women’s Soccer League and Bud Light Women’s Futsal League, but I’ve now been playing with Queen Cobras in the rec league. I never played in high school or middle school – I always wanted to try, but I never had the guts until now.
“To do even better next season, I believe it will take a lot of practice together as a team, improvement with team communication, and better teamwork to set up opportunities to score goals during matches,” the Agat resident added.
When most recreational players hang up their cleats for a few months to rest before the fall season, many players with Queen Cobras will continue getting touches on the ball by practicing three times a week.
In last week’s matches, the Queen Cobras played the Island Eye Specialists/LASIK Lady Eye-Landers and prevailed with a hat trick by Cierra Borja and another goal from Veronica Dydasco. In other Week 5 matches, Femme Fatale took on Pika Soccer Club, and the Heat Wave played against the Lady Bombers.
As all teams have already faced off against each other once through five weeks of play, fixtures in Week 6 were determined by blind draw.
The Queen Cobras drew the Heat Wave for Sunday’s season finale. The two southern teams battled to a scoreless draw in Week 3. Other matchups on Sunday are Femme Fatale playing against the Lady Eye-Landers and Pika SC facing off against the Lady Bombers. All matches begin at 4:15 p.m. at the GFA National Training Center.
