Rovers, Shipyard Begin Men’s Soccer League With Wins

Budweiser Soccer League Division I defending champions Rovers FC are among the current league leaders with a pair of wins in as many matches to begin its 2014-2015 campaign.

After having their Week 1 match rescheduled to a later date, the Rovers began its title defense by clipping Quality Distributors 5-4 in Week 2 and later overcoming a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Southern Cobras 6-3 in Week 3 action.

In the Rovers’ match against Quality, Ian Mariano led the winning team with a hat trick and teammates Yaw Antwi-Agyei and Natsuki Recella also scored in the win. Jan-Willem Staman led Quality with a pair of goals and teammates Nicolas Roberto and Scott Spindel also scored. Against the Cobras, Mariano scored four and last season’s co-Golden Boot winner Jason Cunliffe scored twice. Jan Flores scored twice and Ashton Surber, last season’s co-Golden Boot winner with Cunliffe, scored once for the Cobras in the contest.

Guam Shipyard also is undefeated in two matches with a 1-0 edge over the Paintco Strykers in Week 2 and an 11-0 win over Doosan FC in Week 3. Cameron Giles scored Guam Shipyard’s lone goal against the Strykers within 20 seconds of the opening whistle for the eventual game winner. Don Weakley scored twice in Shipyard’s match against Doosan and Giles, Andre Gadia, Kristian Cruz, Kenneth Karosich, Camden Aguon, Anthony Babauta, Jason Landstrom, Christopher Reyes, and Mark Chargualaf also scored in the win.

The Strykers have earned two wins in three matches – a 13-0 win over Doosan FC in Week 1 and a 3-1 win over Quality Distributors in Week 2. Marcus Lopez scored five goals for the Strykers in his team’s opener and teammates Jonahan Romero and Min Sung Choi scored two each. Christian Dickson, Philip Au, Dylan Naputi and Isiah Lagutang also scored against Doosan. Lopez, Naputi, and Austin Cruz scored against Quality. Scott Leon Guerrero scored Quality’s lone goal against the Strykers.

Division I’s other team, the IP&E/Paradise Fitness Sidekicks, will make their top division debut against the Rovers Monday at 7 p.m. The Sidekicks were promoted to Division I after winning the 2013-2014 season’s Division II championship title.

In Week 2’s Division II matches, the Pago Bay Disasters won 2-1 over FC Beercelona with goals from Jared Leon Guerrero and Shon Muna, Jr. Sho Hammond scored for Beercelona.

Shinko Siheky FC won 2-0 over the Crushers FC with goals from Noriyuki Izumi and Yu Tanabe.

The Strykers DII won 7-3 over United Masters. Stanley Rice and Aaron Manglona led the Strykers with two goals each. Jonah Jones, Ray Vincent Gudmalin, and Scott Kenrick also scored. Tyson Cramer, Jun Xu, and John Capulong scored for United Masters.

The Rovers FC DII won 5-0 over Big Blue. Ik Hyun T. Chu scored twice for the Rovers DII and teammates Agustin Choi, Jeremy Boldt, and Adrian Kense also scored.

The Islanders FC edged Tumon 3-2 with goals from Kyle Perez, Jordan Jasmin, and Devan Mendiola. Ezra Valdez scored both goals for Tumon.

In Week 3 Division II matches, Pago Bay picked up its second win in as many matches with a 4-0 victory over the United Masters. Jathan Muna-Barnes scored twice and teammates Muna and Alvin Merfalen also scored.

The Rovers DII blanked Shinko Siheky FC 5-0 with two goals each from Jeremy Hare and Derek Bender. Jeremy Boldt also scored.

In Masters Division Week 3 action, the Paintco Strykers defeated Big Blue 4-3 led by Rod Hidalgo’s two goals. Susumu Morimoto and Robert Torres also scored in the win. Darren Sampson scored twice for Big Blue and Noel Casilao scored the team’s other goal.

The Rovers Masters defeated IT&E/IP&E 6-0. Manoucher Sabeti and Craig Wade each scored twice and Atsushi Yamamuro and Ian Lawton also scored in the win.
