Quarterfinals Set in 2016 Bank of Guam GFA Cup

[May 17, 2016 – Harmon, Guam] – Quarterfinal spots are all locked up in the Bank of Guam 9th Annual GFA Cup tournament following eight Round 1 matches at the Guam Football Association National Training Center last week.

Rovers DI, champions of the Budweiser Soccer League Premier Division, will begin all quarterfinal fixtures on Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Lots of Art Tattoo Heat. The Rovers DI blanked Shinko Siheky FC, fourth place finishers in BSL Division II, 7-0 with two goals each from Ian Mariano and Logan Dillenburger and one each from David McCallum, Jeremy Boldt, and Natsuki Recella.

The LOA Heat prevented an all-Rovers quarterfinal with a 3-2 victory over Rovers DII, silver finishers in BSL Division II. Riley Jones-Taijeron scored twice for the Heat and William Naden II scored the eventual game winner. Devan Mendiola scored twice for Rovers DII.

The Strykers DI are set to play its quarterfinal match on Saturday beginning at 9 p.m. against the Southern Cobras. The Strykers DI defeated the Islanders FC, third-place finishers in BSL Division II, 9-1. Ricky Katsumata, Michael “Jake” Benito, and Jonahan Romero each scored twice for the winning team and Caleb Barretto, Justin Johnson, and Marcus Lopez also scored. Jordan Jasmin scored the Islanders’ lone goal.

The Cobras punched their ticket to the quarters with an 8-0 shutout of Hyundai Family FC from the BSL Masters Division. Ashton Surber scored five in the win and teammates Antonio Prieto, Jason Miller, and Seth Surber also scored.

Quality Distributors FC avoided an early upset with a 3-2 win in extra time against the Applebee’s Strykers DII. Quality’s Jared Pangindian scored the eventual game winner about 10 minutes into extra time. Takefumi Inoue and James Bush scored in regulation time for Quality to lead 2-1 up until the 90th minute. A goal from the Strykers DII’s Noah Camacho in the final seconds of the match locked the score at 2-all to force extra time. Clayton Mitchell scored the Strykers DII’s other goal.

BSL Division II champions, Big Blue DII secured a quarterfinal spot with a 2-0 win over Rovers Masters, champions of the BSL Masters Division. Austin Davidson and Vincent Magriplis scored for Big Blue DII.

Big Blue DII will next face Quality at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

A short-handed Sidekicks FC team was the first BSL Premier Division team to fall in the main draw following a 14-0 shutout by the Crushers FC. Joshua Pangelinan scored a hat trick for the Crushers and teammates Tyler Guyton, Jonathan Guerrero, and Shane Cepeda scored twice each. Daniel Barker, Justin Samonte, Jason Martin, Joshua Cepeda, and Osie Cruz also scored for the Crushers.

Defending champion Guam Shipyard advanced to the quarterfinals with a forfeit victory over the IT&E Boonie Dawgs from the BSL Masters Division and will play the Crushers next at 7 p.m. Sunday.
