Players Learn From Every Match in Intermediate Women’s Soccer

If it weren’t for some of her family members already playing on the Queen Cobras team in the Guam Football Association Women’s Intermediate 7-A-Side Recreational League, 18-year-old Yigo resident Veronica Dydasco might not have continued playing soccer after high school.

“I decided to play for the Queen Cobras because my aunties Angel (Dydasco) and Tina (Buendicho) and my first cousin Cierra (Borja) all play for the team and I didn’t really know anyone else from the other teams,” Dydasco said. “Playing in this league has been great – I like it. My favorite part about the league is playing matches with my teammates. I really like my team and we all have a lot of fun on the field. Every match we gain experience and learn from our mistakes for the next match.

“Every team we’ve played so far are good and the Lady Bombers we played (Oct. 12) were really challenging – they were aggressive on the field and showed they really wanted to win, or at least that they really didn’t want us to win,” added the 2014 Simon Sanchez High School graduate.

In three matches, Veronica Dydasco said she has scored three goals for the Queen Cobras, including her most recent – a second-half goal that put her team ahead of the Lady Bombers momentarily at 2-1. Dydasco took a shot on goal from outside the box that was sent back her way after opposing defenders tried to clear the ball. Her second attempt at the goal had just enough arch to find the back of the net. The Lady Bombers later equalized for the draw.

“I didn’t think it was going to go in,” Dydasco said after the match of her latest goal. “I thought it was too high and would clear the crossbar. I felt lucky that it went in.”

In other matches, the Island Eye Specialists/LASIK Lady Eye-Landers played against the Heat Wave and Pika Soccer Club took on Sonic Boom.

In upcoming matches, the Queen Cobras will play against Pika Soccer Club at 5 p.m. on United Airlines Field 2A, followed by Sonic Boom against the Island Eye Specialists/LASIK Lady Eye-Landers at 6:15 p.m. The day’s other match will feature the Heat Wave against Femme Fatale at 6:15 p.m. on United Airlines Field 2B.

Rescheduled matches from Week 4, which had been canceled due to the expected passing of Typhoon Vongfong, will be played at 3:45 p.m. Oct. 26
