ND Royals repeat as girls high school soccer champs

[May 22, 2017 – Harmon, Guam] The Notre Dame High School Royals repeated as champions of the IIAAG Girls High School Soccer League with a slim 1-0 win over the George Washington High School Geckos Saturday evening at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

IIAAG Girls High School Soccer League All-Island First-Team midfielder Brianne Leon Guerrero scored the eventual game-winner in the fifth minute, finishing a corner-kick play initiated by Shyann Roberto.

Controversy ensued early in the second half after the Geckos’ Autumn Rese Cruz scored the would-be game-tying goal, as match referees made the decision to call off her goal as one of her teammates was deemed offside on a free-kick by Skyylerblu Johnson.

Unfortunately for the Geckos, ND’s defense stayed focused and compact to avert any other close goal scoring chances as time ran out.

The championship match was delayed by 30 minutes as the third-place match between the Harvest Christian Academy Eagles and the Simon Sanchez High School Sharks ran into extra time and a penalty kick shootout. At the end of regulation time, both teams were level at two goals each, with neither school scoring in extra time. The Eagles eventually won 4-3 in the ensuing penalty kick shootout.

In regulation time, Isa Taitano and Caylani Estoy scored for the Sharks and Remi Norton and Jessica Buckwalter scored for Harvest.

Following both matches, the top three teams in the league were honored in an awards ceremony attended specially by the GFA Women’s Committee members. Also recognized during the awards ceremony were all IIAAG Girls High School Soccer League All-Island First Team selections, as well as Leon Guerrero who was recognized as the Player of the Championship Match.
