18 May JFK wins girls high school championship; 2025 All-Star Team honored
[May 17, 2025 – Harmon, Guam] The John F. Kennedy High School Islanders brought home their fifth-straight girls football trophy after triumphing over the St. John’s School Knights 6-0 in the championship match of the 2025 Interscholastic Girls High School Football League Saturday at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.
“With the team winning today, it feels so amazing I could cry,” said Hana Rae Flores, captain of JFK’s team. “We worked really hard to get to where we are now. We fought so hard today and we earned it.
“The competition today was good – they really pushed us hard; but every mistake we made, we just fixed them, got back on our feet, and we won,” Flores added.
Aubrey Ibanez opened JFK’s scoring bank just two minutes into the match and teammate Leah San Agustin added another before halftime. Ibanez and San Agustin each scored again in the second half and teammates Jaelyn Han and Mylie Navarro each added one to the Islanders’ goal haul.
“The goal every year for the team is to be here and or course bring home a trophy,” said Eladio Manansala, JFK coach. “We worked with this team all season and we peaked at the right time.”
The Islanders won the previous ISA Girls High School Soccer League in its last three seasons – 2021, 2022, and 2023. The Islanders next won in 2024 after the league combined with the IIAAG Girls High School Soccer League, and repeated as champions in 2025 for five-straight championship titles.
Earlier in the day, the Academy of Our Lady of Guam Cougars needed a penalty kick shootout to claim bronze against the Harvest Christian Academy Eagles. Goals by Harvest’s Hayden Thompson and Academy’s Hinengi San Nicolas leveled the contest 1-1 in regular time sending both teams to the penalty spot to determine the winner. The Cougars won 3-0 in the shootout, with Serenity Wusstig, Aiyanna Duenas, and Maria-Jean Paulino securing goals for the victory.
In an awards ceremony after the championship match, the Islanders were presented with the league’s Champions trophy and gold medals, while the Knights were presented with the league’s Second Place trophy and silver medals. The Cougars were presented with bronze medals as third-place finishers.
New to this season are the First All-Star Team and Second All-Star Team honors, with a new selection process by league coaches replacing the former All-Island selection process. This year, each coach submitted names of the top players from each match during the regular season, with all votes tallied at the end of the regular season to determine the top 10 field players, one goalkeeper, and one utility player. A second tally system determined players making the Second All-Star Team.
