ASC Islanders Capture U18 Elite Soccer Title in PK Shootout

[November 7, 2017 – Harmon, Guam] – The ASC Trust Islanders captured the Aloha Maid Minetgot Cup Elite Youth Soccer League U18 Division title Monday night winning a penalty kick shootout 8-7 against Quality Distributors at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

Regulation time could not separate the sides at 3-3, prompting a penalty kick shootout per league rules.

The shootout sent 20 players to the spot for the final score:

• Quality’ Kanta Terai successfully shoots to the right side (Score 1-0 Quality)

• Islanders’ Noah Duenas successfully shoots to the right side (Score 1-1)

• Quality’s Eddie Huang successfully sends his shot up the middle (Score 2-1 Quality)

• Islanders’ Devan Mendiola finds the back of the net after hitting the crossbar (Score 2-2)

• Quality’s James Lee places his shot to the upper left post (Score 3-2 Quality)

• Islanders’ Todd Pangelinan successfully sends his shot to the right side (Score 3-3)

• Quality’s James Jeong sends his shot over the crossbar (Score 3-3)

• Islanders’ Caylani Estoy successfully shoots to the left side (Score 4-3 Islanders)

• Quality’s Bradly Lubas successfully shoots to the left side (Score 4-4)

• Islanders’ Rogel Estrada has his shot blocked by Quality keeper Taka Ward (Score 4-4)

• Quality’s Sam Larkin has his shot tipped back into the net by Islanders keeper Ryan Root (Score 5-4 Quality)

• Islanders’ Daniel Lanquin successfully shoots to the left side (Score 5-5)

• Quality’s William Zheng successfully shoots to the right side (Score 6-5 Quality)

• Islanders’ Nyan Domingo successfully shoots to the right side (Score 6-6)

• Quality’s An Truong has his shot blocked by Islanders keeper Ryan Root (Score 6-6)

• Islanders’ Napu Concepcion sends his shot over the crossbar (Score 6-6)

• Quality’s Taka Ward successfully shoots to the left side (Score 7-6 Quality)

• Islanders’ Aleksander Perez successfully shoots to the left side (Score 7-7)

• Quality’s Masaki Spence sends his shot over the crossbar (Score 7-7)

• Islanders’ Alschea Grape successfully shoots to the left side (Final score 8-7 Islanders)

In regulation time, Quality had the upper hand in the first half, first with a successful penalty kick by Eddie Huang and later, a shot by Sam Larkin after muscling his way past the Islanders’ central defenders for the 2-0 advantage.

The Islanders managed to equalize at 2-2, first on a shot by Todd Pangelinan and later, a finish by Devan Mendiola after outrunning Quality’s defensive line for the score.

Quality’s Camden Camacho gave his team the 3-2 advantage on a header in front of the goal, before the Islanders leveled the match for the final time on a Brandon Auayan shot.

After the championship match, the Islanders were awarded the championship trophy, each player received gold medals, and defender Kennedy Macatuno was honored as the championship match MVP. Quality’s players received silver medals for the runner-up finish. Also recognized were the division’s Golden Boot winner, Micah Hennegan of the Bank of Guam Strykers and the Ryan Root of the Islanders as the division’s Golden Glove winner. The Strykers also received the division’s Fair Play award, finishing the season with the least amount of cautions given by referees.

The Islanders will have the chance to sweep all age divisions of the Aloha Maid Minetgot Cup Elite Youth League Saturday in the finals of the U13 and U15 divisions. Both age divisions will feature respective teams from the Islanders and Wings Red.

The U13 division championship match will kick off at 3 p.m. and the U15 division championship match will kick off at 5 p.m.
