Guam, NMI Win Men’s, Women’s Marianas Cup Respectively

[July 22, 2019 – Harmon, Guam] Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands retained their men’s and women’s titles of the Marianas Cup, respectively, in the 2019 edition of the annual tournament Saturday evening at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

In the U19/U23 Men’s Competition, Guam surged in the second half to claim 6-2 win over NMI. Guam’s Isiah Lagutang scored the eventual game winner in the 63rd minute and teammates Anthony Quidachay, Kyle Halehale, Jacob McDonald, Devan Mendiola, and Clayton Sato also scored. Sunjoon Tenorio scored for the NMI. The NMI’s other goal came on a Guam own goal.

In the U19 Women’s Competition, NMI claimed its second-straight Marianas Cup title with a 3-0 win over Guam with two goals from Gianna Griffin and one from Guinivere Borja.

At the conclusion of both matches, participating teams were recognized in an awards ceremony attended several VIPs including GFA President Tino San Gil and NMIFA President Jerry Tan, GFA Acting General Secretary Cheri Stewart, NMIFA General Secretary Ross Zapanta, NMI Deputy General Secretary Merlie Tolentino, and Saipan mayor David Apatang. Executive Committee members from GFA – Fred Alig, Marvin “Ike” Iseke, Joe Roberto, and Gian Tenorio also were on hand at the awards ceremony, as well as NMIFA Executive Committee member Patricia Coleman and NMIFA CFO Elna Curate.

Winning teams received the tournament trophy as well as gold medals. Second-place finishers received silver medals. Guam’s Kyle Halehale earned his second-straight tournament MVP trophy for for the men’s competition and NMI’s Gianna Griffin earned the MVP trophy for the women’s competition.
