Guam completes bid in Three Nations Cup tourney with even 2-2 record

[July 28, 2024 – Harmon, Guam] Guam completed its bid in the Northern Mariana Islands FA Three Nations Cup tournament with an even 2-2 record July 28 following its fourth and final match at the NMI STC in Saipan.

Guam two wins in the tournament came both against Mongolia – a 2-1 encounter July 24 and a 2-0 shutout July 27.

Guam dropped its first match to the NMI 3-2 in July 25’s fixture and fell to NMI 4-1 in the tournament’s closing match July 28.

Coming into the July 28 clash based on win-loss records, NMI needed only a draw to win the tournament, while Guam needed to win the match for the Champions trophy.

In the tournament’s final match, a goal by Guam’s Cindy Maestrecampo in the 58th minute cut her team’s deficit to just one goal in the winner-takes-all match, but moments later a Guam own goal off an NMI corner kick play and a late NMI penalty kick quelled Guam’s comeback attempt.

NMI finished the tournament with a 4-0 record to win and Mongolia finished in third.

At the end of the tournament Guam finished with seven goals in four matches: Olivia Haddock (2), Cindy Maestrecampo (2), Sarah Benavente & Ariya Cruz. Guam’s other goal in the tournament came on an NMI own goal on July 25.
