[February 24, 2026 – Harmon, Guam] Eight elementary schools will take part in the inaugural Guam Football Association Futsal 4 Schools, a new league beginning Feb. 27 and will run concurrently with the larger Football 4 Schools program.

“For many years, we’ve intended to put on a consistent futsal league or tournament for youth players and saw the popularity and potential with last year’s Sengsong Summer Slam, a youth futsal league in the different villages,” said Samuel San Gil, GFA Director of Football Events. “I’m excited to get Futsal 4 Schools underway. I’d like to thank the participating schools for taking part in the pilot season and village mayors who’ve agreed to lend their village gyms for some of the school teams to participate in the league, as well as our local business partners who continue to support these important annual programs for our youth.

“Additionally, we received a huge boost from the AFC Dream Asia Foundation, which has awarded funds for us to put on both the Football 4 Schools and Futsal 4 Schools programs this school year,” San Gil added.

The eight schools competing in the pilot season are Bishop Baumgartner Memorial Catholic School, C.L. Taitano Elementary School, Dominican Catholic School, Harvest Christian Academy, iLearn Academy Charter School, Talofofo Elementary School, Tamuning Elementary School, and Upi Elementary School. Each school will field separate boys and girls teams.

To help kickstart the new program, GFA donated sets of futsal goals to participating schools and village gyms in Sinajana, Talofofo, Tamuning, Yigo, and Yona. In addition to the futsal goals, GFA also donated sets of futsal balls and different colored bibs to each of the participating schools.

The futsal equipment was purchased for the participating schools utilizing a portion of the funding from the AFC Dream Asia Foundation grant. In August last year, GFA was awarded $67,000 to fund the Football 4 Schools and Futsal 4 Schools programs, which feature a life skills learning component and a social responsibility component, in addition to an athletic component. While Futsal 4 Schools will feature eight elementary schools, the larger Football 4 Schools program featured 25 schools last year.

This school year’s campaign and core message is “Be a Good Citizen,” centered on respect for the land, ocean and each other. GFA has partnered with the Guam Department of Education, Guam Police Department, Guam Airport Police, and Department of Agriculture Division of Aquatics and Wildlife Resources to enhance the delivery of this year’s core message to elementary school students with Guam’s youth national team players.

Futsal is a small-sided indoor version of football recognized by FIFA. The first-ever FIFA Futsal World Cup was held in 1989 in the Netherlands, while the first-ever FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup was held in 2025 in the Philippines. The fast-paced game is played in a 5-a-side format, with a specialized futsal ball comparable to a Size 4 football, but heavier in weight.

The GFA Futsal 4 Schools league will officially kick off Feb. 27 with the Harvest Christian Academy Eagles taking on the C.L. Taitano Elementary Deerlings at Harvest’s gym and Upi Elementary School hosting matches against Talofofo Elementary School at the Yigo gym. Both match-ups will begin at 5 p.m.
