Final Four Teams Set for Semis in Bank of Guam Tourney

[May 18, 2019 – Harmon, Guam] Defending champions Bank of Guam Strykers FC are among the final four teams still alive in the Bank of Guam 12th Annual GFA Cup tournament following quarterfinal action at the Guam Football Association National Training Center Thursday and Friday evenings.

In the closest match of the quarterfinals, the Strykers managed to pull away from the University of Guam Tritons midway through the second half to win 3-1 and earn a spot in the semifinals. With both teams entering the deciding half with one goal each, the Strykers’ Joe Connelley scored the eventual game winner in the 60th minute. A little over 15 minutes later, Scott Spindel scored his team’s third goal, managing to get his foot on the ball to send it into the net during a brief tussle with UOG goalkeeper Jake Uncangco near the goal box.

Isiah Lagutang scored the Strykers’ first-half goal in the sixth minute and UOG’s Ryoga Okada scored his team’s lone goal in the 12th minute.

In other quarterfinal matches, the NAPA Rovers defeated the GWM Bombers SC 10-1. Devan Mendiola, Min Sung Choi and Kelby Hernandez each scored twice in the contest and teammates James Lee, Gustavo Pro, Matt Robles, and Bryan Cadiz also contributed in the goal haul. Jaime Arias scored the Bombers’ lone goal in the 13th minute.

In Friday evening matches, the Islanders FC defeated the Sidekicks SC 7-1 with two goals from Aaron Blaz and one each from Jermaine Whyte, Antonio Prieto, Jared Pangindian, Tayler Bonner, and Robert Prieto. Sih Heon Kim scored the Sidekicks’ lone goal in the 64th minute.

Quality Distributors advanced to the semifinals with a 7-1 win over Lots of Art Tattoo Heat. Edson Toussaint led all scorers with a hat trick and teammate Oscar Ramirez scored twice. Donovin Inta and Takefumi Inoue also scored for Quality. Riley Jones Taijeron scored for LOA Heat in the 44th minute.

Semifinals will be played Thursday with the NAPA Rovers FC taking on the Islanders FC at 7 p.m. followed by the Bank of Guam Strykers taking on Quality Distributors at 9 p.m. Both matches will be played at GFA and there is no admission fee to watch.
