Fall Season of All-Girls League Kicks Off Saturday

Guam Football Association is inviting all girls to participate in the fall season of the 2014 GFA & The Score’s “Just Kick It” All-Girls League beginning Saturday at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

“With the all-girls league, I like the fact that it’s just for us girls – we can learn how to work together as a team better,” said Samantha Kenney, who has played in past editions of the league. “It’s also good to meet players from other clubs that we don’t usually play with, since the coaches mix the teams.

“For this upcoming league, I hope we’ll have more matches to play than last time,” added the 10-year-old Harvest Christian Academy student.

The All-Girls League, supported in large part by FIFA Women’s Football Development grant funds, will feature play in the U8, U10, and U12 age divisions in a festival-style format, with all matches beginning Saturday at 4 p.m. The U14 and U17 age division play will begin one week later and will feature tournament-style matches. All players in the All-Girls League will be placed onto teams at GFA. The league will run for four weeks.

All girls interested to play who do not already have a 2014 GFA youth player card will need to register at GFA. The registration fee is $40 and is valid through to the end of the year. The card can also be used to play in the upcoming Triple J Auto Group Robbie Webber Youth League, which begins Sept. 13, the Saturday following the conclusion of the All-Girls League.

“The youth league is more challenging because we combine to play with the boys, but with the all-girls league, we have more opportunities to practice our skills and team work,” said 10-year-old Jadyn Palomares. “I’m looking forward to playing in the all-girls league – I’ll get more exercise and more matches in before the youth league starts.

“It’s a good league for us girls and I would recommend that more girls play,” added the Santa Barbara Catholic School student who plays for the ASC Trust Islanders.

The All-Girls League is one of many programs supported by a Women’s Football Development Grant from FIFA. Other upcoming programs include the fall season of the GFA Soccer Moms League and the Women’s Intermediate 7-A-Side Recreational League.
