24 Jan Fall 2017 Triple J Youth Soccer League Kicks Off First Week
[September 17, 2017 – Harmon, Guam] – Not even a morning rain shower could dampen the spirit of about 1,000 youth soccer players on opening day of the Triple J Auto Group Robbie Webber Youth Soccer League at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.
Over 100 teams in the U6 to U15 age divisions played their league openers Saturday and teams in the U18 division will begin play Sept. 23.
“I think my first game this season was exciting,” said Isaiah Ooka, who plays for the Sidekick SC in the U10 division, after the team’s match against the Matson Southern Heat. “It was exciting because I didn’t know I would score a goal but I got one.
“I like soccer because I like to play with my friends and I want to make my whole family proud of me. I think they were proud of me today,” the fourth-grader at St. Anthony Catholic School added.
Close to 130 goals were scored by teams in the competitive divisions of the Triple J youth league.
In the U15 division, the EFR Southern Cobras defeated the Tumon Typhoons Soccer Club 7-0, the Guam Shipyard Wolverines defeated the ASC Trust Islanders Betde 3-0, and the FC Barrigada Crusaders defeated Quality Distributors 5-0.
In the U13 division, the Sidekick SC Blue blanked Tumon, the Islanders shut out the Bank of Guam Strykers and the Wolverines posted a 3-0 win over Community First/Days Inn Dededo Soccer Club. Sidekick SC Red battled to a 2-2 draw with Southern Heat, the Southern Cobras defeated Islanders Apaka 6-3, the NBG Tornadoes defeated Islanders Isa 8-2, and the NAPA Rovers defeated FC Barrigada Crusaders 6-1.
In the U10 Level 1 division, the Islanders, Wings Red, and Wings Black all posted shutout wins over the Rovers, Strykers, and Bombers, respectively. Dededo defeated Tumon Black, Cobras defeated Tumon Red 5-1, and Wolverines Blue defeated Quality Distributors 4-2.
As part of opening day festivities, Triple J Auto Group representatives featured a “Sure Shot” goal shooting activity and provided prizes to youth players with the highest number of points scored. Youth players were also treated to complimentary Mangge Pops thanks to Bank of Guam as part of the bank’s Find Kind promotion of the Random Acts of BOG program.
In Saturday’s Aloha Maid Minetgot Cup Elite Youth League U13 division matches, the Islanders defeated Dededo 7-1 with two goals each from Nainoa Norton and Justin Joseph and one each from Riley Rama, Jadyn Palomares, and EJ Sablan.
The Wolverines posted a 4-2 victory over the Strykers with two goals from EJ Manibusan and one each from Isaiah Topasna and A.J. Chaco. Andrew Choi scored both goals for Strykers.
