Elite Youth League Players to Be Scouted for All-Star Team

[September 2, 2017 – Harmon, Guam] – Notable performances in Aloha Maid Minetgot Cup Elite Youth League U18 division matches may lead to a call up to represent Guam as part of a U18 All-Star team in next month’s Marianas Cup tournament.

In partnership with the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association, GFA will play host to this year’s tournament, which will feature two matches: Guam U18 Boys All-Star Team against the NMI U18 Boys national team and the Masakåda, Guam Women’s National Team, against the NMI Women’s National Team. Both matches will be played on Sunday, Oct. 8, with the boys’ match kicking off at 4 p.m. and the women’s match set for a 7 p.m. kick off time.

“Particularly for the Guam U18 Boys All-Star team that we will be assembling for the tournament, I’ve tasked GFA’s coaching staff to closely watch U18 division matches in the Minetgot Cup and assess all players in the league for a call up to the team,” said Belinda Wilson, GFA Technical Director.

“What we’re looking for in players is consistency in high-level performance during matches, a high level of game I.Q., proper fitness, and a desire to represent Guam in international competition. Once selected, a firm commitment to attend training sessions for the tournament and availability for the match is required from the players.”

Mark Chargualaf has been selected as head coach for the team and will be assisted by Bryan Cadiz. A total of 22 players will be selected: 16 field players, two goalkeepers, and four alternate players. Players’ birth years must be between 1999 and 2001.

Training sessions will be held at 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5. A third session is set for 6 p.m. on Oct. 7.

All players selected will be notified by E-mail through their respective clubs by Sept. 27.

As of Week 3 standings in the Aloha Maid Minetgot Cup Elite Youth League’s U18 Division, the ASC Trust Islanders are on top of the leaderboard with a 2-0-1 record and the most goals scored at 10 in three matches. Second is Wings Red (2-0) followed by Bank of Guam Strykers (1-1). Tigers are ahead of Quality Distributors for fourth and fifth place spots, respectively, based on higher number of goals scored.

In the Golden Boot race, the Strykers’ Clayton Mitchell and the Islanders’ Devan Mendiola are tied for first with four goals scored. Next are Islanders’ Todd Pangelinan and Brandon Auayan, Wings Red’s Takumi Odell, Kyle Halehale, and Tyler Presto, and Tigers’ Donovan Ybanez with two goals each through Week 3 matches.
