Defending champs Strykers open futsal season with win

[June 28, 2021 – Harmon, Guam] Defending champions Bank of Guam Strykers opened the 2021 Budweiser Futsal League with an 8-4 win over Quality Distributors at the Guam Sports Complex Gym Friday evening, as the league officially kicked off after over a year due to the pandemic.

The futsal league was last played in 2019 as all summer leagues in 2020 were canceled.

In the Strykers-Quality match, Marcus Lopez led all scorers with four goals and teammate Shane Healy contributed a hat trick in the win. Jehn Joyner scored the Strykers’ other goal. Justin Zavala scored twice for Quality and teammates Paul Long and Brandon Auayan also scored.

In other matches, Guam Shipyard battled to a 5-5 draw with NAPA Rovers. Ashton Surber led Shipyard with two goals and teammates Antonio Prieto, Jan Flores, and Damien Khoo also scored. Miran Berisha and Mark Chargualaf each scored twice for the Rovers and Devan Mendiola scored the team’s other goal.

The Sidekick SC slipped past the Wings 9-8 with four goals from Jeremy Copple and one each from Derrick Cruz, John Ilao, Adam Rivera, Michael Rosario, and Sampson Sheppard. Scott Spindel scored five for the Wings and teammates Shawn Spindel, Anthony Simon, and Ross Awa also scored.

In Sunday’s matches, league newcomer Friars Football Club edged Orange Crushers 7-6 with three goals from Nainoa Norton and one each from Levi Buckwalter, Daniel Glasscock, Robert Haddock, and Kai Pahl. Jacob Concepcion scored three for the Crushers, and teammate Leeray Zapatos scored twice. Joseph Kim scored the Crushers’ other goal.

Mosa’s defeated Haagen Dazs 7-4 with two goals from Noel Sablan and one each from Gideon Tyquiengco, Blaise Alig, Lance Chargualaf, Jason Miller, and Jared Quichocho. David Cruz scored three for Haagen Dazs and Bryan Taijeron scored the team’s other goal.
