Championship Matches in U14, U17 to Be Contested Tuesday

[Harmon, GU – Dec. 27, 2014] – The Southern Heat will take on the undefeated Sharks in the championship match of the Guam Football Association and The Score’s “Just Kick It” All-Girls League U17 division 7 p.m. Tuesday after edging the ASC Trust Islanders 2-1 in the semifinals at the GFA National Training Center.

The Islanders took the early 1-0 lead after rough play by the Southern defense in the box awarded a penalty kick successfully taken by the Islanders’ Paris “Mames” Blas. Minutes later, a shot from the Heat’s Clarissa Albalos leveled the match and although both teams’ defenses stepped up for the remainder of the match, the Islanders were unable to contain the division’s Golden Boot winner Colleen Naden from scoring the team’s eventual game winner.

The Sharks had less difficulty in its semifinal match, winning 11-1 against the Cobras. Skyylerblu Johnson finished with a double hat trick and teammate Maria Abbey Iriarte scored a hat trick in the win. Kiara Camacho and Caylani Estoy also contributed goals in the win. Edrianna Lorenzo scored the Cobras’ lone goal.

In other U17 playoff matches, Quality Distributors defeated Tumon 8-0 with three goals from Franshay Shippey, two from Hopemary Calip and one each from Megan Larkin, Mia Chabanne, and Grace Clark. The Geckos defeated the Knights 6-2 with three goals fro Jo’ani Gogue, two from Bila Aguon, and one from Aiesha Castro. Kristina Folta scored both goals for the Knights.

In the U14 division, the Guam Shipyard Wolverines will take on the Islanders in a showdown of the two undefeated teams from the group stage. The Wolverines moved past the Sidekick SC 4-1 in the semifinals – its closest match of the season – with one goal each from Tiffani Lopez, Hannah Cruz, Brianne Leon Guerrero, and the U14 Golden Boot winner Chloe Salas. Roben Morellano scored for the Sidekick SC.

In the other semifinal match, the Islanders defeated Hyundai 9-2 with a hat trick from Mia San Nicolas and two from Thea Baker. Isabella Bass, Jenna Han, Francine Bumagat, and Erin Wang also scored. Jalana Garcia and Ylaine Austria scored for Hyundai.

In the group stage, the Wolverines dominated the U14 Plumeria group outscoring their opponents 34-0 in three matches. The championship match opponents, the Islanders, dominated the U14 Hibiscus group, outscoring their opponents 18-5 in three matches.

The U17 division championship match between the Heat and the Sharks will be contested at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by the U14 division championship match between the Wolverines and the Islanders kicking off at 8 p.m.
