
16 Jan ASC Trust Islanders Win SP17 U13 Division of Minetgot Cup
[April 30, 2017 – Harmon, Guam] – The ASC Trust Islanders used an explosive second half to win against the previously undefeated Wings Red team 5-2 in the U13 division of the 2017 Aloha Maid Minetgot Cup Elite Youth League Spring season Saturday afternoon at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.
After battling to a 2-2 draw in the first half, both teams began the deciding half looking to gain the early edge. Unfortunately for Wings Red, an own goal helped its opponents gain momentum to close out the match for the title. The Islanders tacked on another two goals – one each from U13 division Golden Boot Mason Sanchez and championship match MVP EJ Sablan – to put the match out of reach for Wings Red as time expired.
Sanchez also scored a goal in the first half and teammate Riley Rama scored the Islanders’ other goal. Justin Joseph and Nainoa Norton scored for Wings Red.
On paper, Wings Red were ranked No. 1 coming into the championship match with a 9-0-1 record, with its lone draw coming against the Guam Shipyard Wolverines. The Islanders were ranked No. 2 with an 8-2 record, with both losses to Wings Red in the regular season. Additionally, Wings Red only allowed three goals in 10 matches.
In the awards ceremony after the match, the Islanders were presented with the champions trophy and team members Sanchez and Sablan won the Golden Boot and championship match MVP awards, respectively. Wings Red goalkeeper Mason Bonner won the division’s Golden Glove award. Also recognized was Community First/Days Inn Dededo Soccer Club as the division’s Fair Play Award recipient.
