
16 Jan Wings Red Win U15 Division of Minetgot Cup Elite Soccer
[April 30, 2017 – Harmon, Guam] – Wings FC survived sudden death in a penalty kick shootout against the ASC Trust Islanders to claim the U15 division championship title of the 2017 Aloha Maid Minetgot Cup Elite Youth League Spring season Saturday evening at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.
After battling to a 1-1 draw in regulation time, both teams immediately entered a penalty kick shootout, featuring goalkeepers Marcus Del Rosario and Saena San Nicolas of Wings FC and ASC Trust Islanders, respectively, to determine the championship match winners. After the first five from both teams finished their spot kicks to even out the contest at 5-5 in the shootout, league rules stipulate that the teams will continue to place kicks on the spot in a sudden death format.
Wings Red stayed perfect in the shootout, but the sixth shot taken by the Islanders went wide right before referee David Drews blew his whistle to signal the end of the match.
On paper, the Islanders were ranked No. 1 coming into the championship match with a 6-1-1 record, with its lone loss coming against the Tigers and its lone draw against Wings FC. Wings FC were ranked No. 2 with an 4-2-2 record, with the team’s two losses against the Islanders and Tigers. Wings FC battled to draws with the Islanders and Community First/Days Inn Dededo Soccer Club in the regular season.
In the awards ceremony after the match, Wings FC were presented with the champions trophy and gold medals. Islanders goalkeeper Saena San Nicolas won the division’s Golden Glove award and Tigers’ Micah Hennegan won the division’s Golden Boot award. Also recognized was Bank of Guam Strykers FC as the division’s Fair Play Award recipient.
