21 Nov Quality Topples Lady Crushers in Women’s Soccer
Quality Distributors FC snapped Doosan Lady Crushers’ three-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory in a Week 4 match of the Bud Light Women’s Soccer League at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.
The loss, coupled with a Lady Rovers victory in the evening’s late match, toppled the former league frontrunners to second in league standings moving into Week 5.
April Talledo scored twice for Quality and teammates Zoe Surber and Paris “Mames” Blas each contributed a goal in the win. Colleen Naden scored the lone goal for the Lady Crushers.
Despite the loss, the Lady Crushers still lead in most goals scored, with 36 in four matches. Naden and teammate Skyylerblu Johnson are tied for first with 10 goals each in the league’s Golden Boot race.
In the evening’s late match, the Lady Rovers overcame a 1-0 deficit at halftime to defeat the Paintco Lady Strykers 2-1.
Heavy rain temporarily flooded parts of United Airlines Field 1 and limited visibility and ball movement for the majority of the first half, with both teams forced to make adjustments early. A Lady Rovers’ defensive error on a ball clearance in the opening minute of play provided a golden opportunity for the Lady Strykers’ Dausha Magalhaes, whose strike escaped the reach of opposing goalkeeper Cara Walsh to give her team a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Rovers, however, found their rhythm early in the second half, with an opening minute goal from Niki Perkins. Catherine Kendall, newcomer to the league, later scored the eventual game winner in the 63rd minute for the final 2-1 score.
The win, coupled with the Lady Crushers’ earlier loss to Quality, catapulted the Lady Rovers to the top position in league standings. The Lady Rovers currently are the only undefeated team in the league with three wins and one draw.
In Week 4’s other match, Guam Shipyard defeated Hyundai 6-3 led by Destiny Castro’s five goals. Randi Jo Paulino scored Shipyard’s other goal. Hyundai’s Jalana Garcia, former middle school soccer standout at Agueda I. Johnston Middle School, scored her first goal in the women’s league and teammates Ianna Mariano and Shana Spindel also scored.
Women’s league action continues Sunday with Hyundai taking on the Lady Strykers at 5:30 p.m. on United Airlines Field 2 and Shipyard facing Quality on United Airlines Field 1, also at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Rovers will play against the Lady Crushers on United Airlines Field 1 in the late game kicking off at 7:30 p.m.
The Paintco Lady Strykers’ Koharu Minato cuts behind the Lady Rovers’ Rhoda Bamba (No. 11) as she looks to get through the Lady Rovers defense during a Week 4 match of the Bud Light Women’s Soccer League at the Guam Football Association National Training Center Sunday. The Lady Rovers edged the Lady Strykers 2-1.
