Sidekicks Lone Undefeated Team in Budweiser Soccer

With a 5-2 win over Big Blue in Week 7 action of the Budweiser Soccer League at the Guam Football Association National Training Center, the Sidekicks remain as the only undefeated team in the league going into the holiday break.

Big Blue played catch up for the entire match after the Sidekicks gained the 1-0 advantage on a goal from Zachary Pangelinan in the opening minutes of the contest. Later, Shawn Spindel doubled the Sidekicks lead before Big Blue’s Jonathan Toves put his team on the scoreboard with a goal midway through the half. The Sidekicks’ Joseph Santos later extended his team’s lead, following up on a shot from Pangelinan deflected toward the left post for the 3-1 halftime score.

Big Blue made the game interesting five minutes into the half, earning a free kick within striking distance to the goal. Kevin Tainatongo, who is currently tied for the top spot in the Division II Golden Boot race, made it a one-goal match sending his spot kick toward the right post.

The Sidekicks were back on track moments later with a Gregorio Borja goal from the right side and a header for goal powered in by Pangelinan sealed the Sidekicks’ seventh win in as many weeks in the final match of the league before the holiday break.

Division I and II matches resume Jan. 10 and the Masters Division continues Jan. 9.

In other Week 7 Division II matches, the Rovers DII defeated the FC Shotguns 8-0. Jeremy Hare scored four goals and teammate Adrian Kenie scored twice. Peter Houk and Kazuki Yoshida also scored in the Rovers DII win. The Ambassadors defeated Xtra Krispy 3-0 with goals from Jose Hilliard, Jason Flores and Mike Sypien. Doosan FC defeated the Pago Bay Disasters 9-4, led by Jeremy Hewitt’s hat trick. Matt Robles and Luis Quichocho scored twice for Doosan and Paul Alger and Allan Angoco also scored. Jared Meno struck twice for Pago Bay and Roke Matanane and Alvin Merfalen each scored once. The Crushers FC defeated FC Beercelona 2-1 with goals from Lukas Rodriguez and Franklin Castro. Pele Torres scored FC Beercelona’s lone goal.

In Division I action, the Rovers DI finish the first seven weeks of play in first place following a 4-0 shut out of Guam Shipyard. Jason Cunliffe scored a hat trick and teammate Regis Cavalie also contributed in the win. Quality Distributors blanked Table 35/Fuji Ichiban Espada FC 7-0. Aaron Scott and Jan-Willem Staman each scored twice in the Quality win. Kaito Inoue, Phillip Ogo and Scott Spindel also scored for Quality. The Southern Cobras overpowered the Paintco Strykers 10-2, led by Ashton Surber’s double hat trick. Austin Cruz scored twice and teammates David John Cruz and Keith Surber also scored in the win. Derek Bender and Jonathan Archibald scored for the Strykers.

In Masters Division play, the Paintco Strykers Masters defeated IT&E/IP&E 3-2. Rod Hidalgo struck twice for the winning team and Keith Dickson scored the Strykers’ other goal. Manoucher Sabeti and Russ Buckwalter scored for IT&E/IP&E. The Rovers Masters defeated Big Blue Masters 3-1. Carlos Barajas, Ian Lawton and Jan-Hendrik Meidinger scored for the Rovers. Shawn Gumataotao scored Big Blue’s lone goal.
