Tactical sessions begin for Matao in Qatar training camp

[October 7, 2015 - Doha, Qatar] With the bulk of the Matao squad now having joined the team's training camp in Qatar the group today began their tactical preparation ahead of next week's crunch World Cup qualifier with Turkmenistan.

The group spent the day undergoing physical testing before hitting the training ground at Al Wakrah stadium for an hour-long session in the early evening where the temperature still managed to top 38 degrees Celsius.

With Guam aiming to take maximum points away to Turkmenistan in Ashgabat next Tuesday there was a focus on working on an attack-minded playing style with several passing drills and a lot of lateral and vertical movement.


Matao in Qatar for training camp ahead of WCQ match

[October 6, 2015 - Doha, Qatar] With the Matao’s next FIFA World Cup qualification match now only a week away, members of the men’s senior national team have began gathering for a pre-match training camp in Qatar.

Ten of the 22-strong squad arrived on an early morning flight in the Qatari capital, Doha, where they will be based for a week before flying to Turkmenistan on Sunday.

That clash with Asia’s 155th ranked nation will be the fifth of eight second-round matches with Guam currently sitting joint top of Group D alongside Iran and Oman.

Head coach, Gary White, said this upcoming fixture will be the most crucial the side has yet faced.


Matao looks ahead to next World Cup Qualifier matches

[September 21, 2015 - Harmon, Guam] Guam continued its undefeated streak at home with a scoreless draw against Oman, ranked No. 100 in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings, at the Guam Football Association National Training Center Sept. 8 in a match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2.

“First of all, I would like to thank Oman for a very competitive game,” said Gary J. White, head coach of the Matao, Guam men’s national team, in the post-match press conference. “I think it really was a game of two halves – we started out very well, we controlled the first half well. We had chances when we should have scored then, and in the second half, (Oman) really came at us, so you can see why they are a top 100 team in the world.

“I’m pleased with the performance of the players and I saw some great character during the match. We learned a lot from the Iran game and our stadium here has really become a fortress – we haven’t lost a match here,” White added.


Iran earns win against Asia's Group D leader Guam

[September 3, 2015 - Tehran, Iran] Asia's No. 1 country, I.R. Iran won its first 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier match in a home fixture against Guam Sept. 3 at Azadi Stadium.

Mehdi Taremi, Sardar Azmoun, substitute Mehdi Torabi and Ashkan Dejagah all combined for six goals against Guam, Group D leaders after the qualification round's first two fixtures.

Ahead of the match, the Matao showed confidence in taking on the continent's top-ranked country and showcasing its established style of play that has brought Guam to its highest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking to date - No. 146 in the world.


Matao train in Osaka, will play in I.R. Iran

[August 31, 2015 - Osaka, Japan] After a weeklong training camp in Osaka, Japan, the Matao will depart this evening for Tehran ahead of their 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Joint Qualification Round 2 match with I.R. Iran on Thursday.

With all the players now in camp after the arrival of LA Galaxy defender A.J. DeLaGarza yesterday the team and staff are fully focused on what is likely to be the biggest challenge the side has faced in many years.

Head Coach Gary White said the training camp was of immense benefit and he already feels that there is a new intensity amongst the playing group.
