Guam ready to face India in World Cup Qualifier clash

[November 12, 2015 - Bangalore, India] Team Matao have held their final training session ahead of Thursday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Joint Preliminary Qualification Round 2 match with India where they got their first look at the match venue, the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

With the rain that has been lashing Bangalore finally subsiding the players went through their paces in fine, cool, conditions in the early evening where they looked sharp and eager for matchday to arrive.

Life-changing experience for Matao at India's Parikrma School

[November 10, 2015 - Bangalore, India] One of the best parts of being an international footballer is that you get to travel the world, playing the game that you love.

Far too often though that world is one lived in hotels and on the training grounds with only minimal interaction amongst the people whose country you’ve come to play.

On Tuesday, the Matao got to see the other side as they spent the morning at a school for underprivileged children in Bangalore.

The Parikrma School has helped to transform the lives of more than 1700 children since it’s founding in 2003 where they provide quality education to the poorest of the poor, with the children coming from more than 70 slums dotted throughout the city.

Matao continue training in India despite pouring rain

[November 9, 2015 - Bangalore, India] Amidst driving rain in Bangalore, Guam continued to ramp up their preparations for the upcoming World Cup match with India.

The side took to the Bangalore Football Stadium pitch in the late afternoon after rain had been steadily falling for much of the day but that didn’t hamper what was a solid session where the side worked through its tactical approach for the clash with the Blue Tigers.

“What pleased me the most was the application of the team,” said Gary White, head coach of the Matao.

“The conditions weren’t ideal but we were still able to put in place some core ideas for what is an absolutely huge match.”

Matao begin training in India ahead of World Cup Qualifier

[November 8, 2015 - Bangalore, India] The bulk of the Matao squad has arrived in Bangalore ahead of Thursday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2 match with India in a confident mood that they can get the job done against the Blue Tigers.

With Iran, Turkmenistan and Guam all sitting within a point of each other in the race for final round World Cup qualification places there is plenty at stake in the southern Indian city.

After Indian captain Sunil Chettri claimed in the buildup to the match that Guam ‘aren’t that good’ the squad is determined to make the forward regret those words.

Guam goes down fighting against Turkmenistan

[October 14, 2015 - Ashgabat, Turkmenistan] The Matao have suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Turkmenistan at a packed and hostile Kopetdag Stadium in Ashgabat this evening, but despite the result the side remains on track to reach both the next round of qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

Head Coach Gary White made three changes to the side that drew with Oman last month and without key central defender AJ DeLaGarza, the Matao were stung early when Guvanch Abylov scored just after the quarter hour.

Thereafter Ryan Guy missed a good opportunity to put the Matao ahead but the side responded well with a series of chances from both open play and set piece situations where they enjoyed greater possession and recorded more shots than the hosts.
