Defending champs Lady Crushers drop 2018 futsal opener

[June 26, 2018 - Harmon, Guam] The Bank of Guam Lady Strykers opened its 2018 Bud Light Women’s Futsal League season with a 7-3 win over defending champions Lady Crushers Sunday at the Guam Sports Complex gym in Harmon.

Alexy Dacanay led the Lady Strykers’ attack with a hat trick and teammates Jinae Teria, Ariya Cruz, Abigail San Gil, and Hannah Cruz scored one each in the win. Kaeliana Taitano, Colleen Naden and Kimberly Sherman scored for the Lady Crushers.

In other matches Sunday, last season’s runner-up Quality Distributors started off on the right foot with a 9-3 victory over Heavy Hitters/Nutrition Mission Heat.

Bank of Guam Strykers team win first-ever GFA Cup title

[July 1, 2018 - Harmon, Guam] The Bank of Guam Strykers I stayed perfect through the Jamaican Grill 11th Annual GFA Cup to claim the 2018 title in a 5-1 contest against the NAPA Rovers FC Saturday at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

With the match level at 1-1 at the halftime break, the Strykers turned up the intensity in the deciding half, scoring four unanswered goals for the title. Speedster Joshua Calvo led all scorers with a pair of goals for the winning team and teammates Scott Spindel, Clayton Mitchell and Aidan Dickson also scored for the Strykers. Shawn Spindel scored the Rovers’ lone goal in the 14th minute.

The Strykers become only the fourth team to win the tournament since its inception. Both Quality Distributors and Guam Shipyard have won the tournament four times and the NAPA Rovers won the other two editions.

Atsuta, Meyar to take part in youth event at FIFA World Cup

[June 7, 2018 - Harmon, Guam] Guam’s Raito Atsuta and Riku Meyar will be among the multitude of football fans from around the world flocking to Moscow, Russia to witness the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Atsuta and Meyar will be taking part in Gazprom’s Football for Friendship program, an international children’s social program spearheaded by the FIFA partner. The pair, the first from Guam to take part in this global program, will be in Moscow for a week engaging with youth representatives from all of FIFA’s 211 member nations in various activities, including a trip to Luzhniki Stadium to watch the tournament’s opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

“I can’t wait to go to Russia, I’ve been counting down the days,” said Atsuta, who plays for the Wings FC in the U13 division of the Aloha Maid Minetgot Cup Elite Youth League. “In addition to soccer, I want to see famous places and things they have there and also to meet people.”

Matao works with Make A Wish to grant child's wish

[June 13, 2015 - Tamuning, Guam] Matao head coach Gary White, captain Jason Cunliffe, and teammates Ryan Guy and A.J. DeLaGarza took some time off from their training camp to visit Miguel Rosario, a patient in Guam Memorial Hospital's Pediatric ICU, who will be leaving Guam to the Philippines for surgery due to complications from a congenital heart disease.

The surprise visit was coordinated by Make-A-Wish Foundation - Guam Chapter, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening diseases. MAWF Executive Director Victor Camacho was on hand for the presentation, along with Ray Haddock from the Orange Crushers FC, GMH nurses, and Rosario's parents Michael and Annie.
