Tryout dates for new, free-of-charge Academy program set

[July 7, 2017 - Harmon, Guam] The Guam Football Association technical department recently released its latest schedule for the 2017 United Airlines GFA National Academy, with open trial sessions beginning Jul. 24 at the GFA National Training Center.

The new program, with support from Japan Football Association, will run for 20 weeks from Jul. 31 to Dec. 15, featuring six boys divisions and three girls divisions. The 2017 program and the open trial sessions are free-of-charge for the players, and only a maximum of 16 athletes for each of the nine divisions will be selected, among other changes from previous years.

“As a result of a recent Technical and Development Strategic Plan Workshop held last month in collaboration with a variety of stakeholders and with the support of the GFA Executives, we’ve fine-tuned programs and their objectives for our elite football athletes, including the National Academy,” said Belinda Wilson, GFA Technical Director.

High tryout numbers prompt Girls U9 Academy division

[July 28, 2017 - Harmon, Guam] With the large turnout of youth athletes for the United Airlines GFA National Academy open trial sessions, Guam Football Association added one additional age division – U9 Girls – for the 2017 program.

“We had originally planned to have only three divisions for our girls – U10, U12, and U14 – but with a high number of girls registered for the U10 division, we were able to create a separate group for those born in 2008,” said Belinda Wilson, GFA Technical Director. “This is exciting news, as we are closer to our reaching our technical and development objectives, particularly for girls, in GFA’s Strategic Plan a bit quicker than anticipated. It’s also testament to the growing number of girls in the community who enjoy playing the sport and look to ascend through our elite player pathway.

“We hope that this trend continues in next year’s edition so that the girls program will fully mirror the boys program in terms of featuring separate groups based on respective birth year,” Wilson added.

Baker, Damian, Besagar recognized with Academy honors

[December 2, 2016 - Harmon, Guam] Gavin Baker, Kalle Damian, and Ashley Besagar were recently recognized by United Airlines Guam Football Association National Academy directors as Players and Coach of the Cycle, respectively, for the program’s final cycle of 2016 with awards presented by Jamaican Grill.

“I've worked with several players in my career as a coach and Gavin is one of those players for whom I have higher aspirations,” said Dominic Gadia, Academy Director. “He may be small in stature, but in this sport, technique and creativity triumph over physique. Gavin has so much skill that he can get himself out of situations against bigger, faster, and multiple opponents. Players like Gavin have all the potential in the world and I hope that we as coaches can continue to help him develop.

“Gavin is a player you want to see play at the highest level possible and he is amongst a generation of very talented players who will represent Guam well in the future,” Gadia added.
