Tryout dates for new, free-of-charge Academy program set

[July 7, 2017 - Harmon, Guam] The Guam Football Association technical department recently released its latest schedule for the 2017 United Airlines GFA National Academy, with open trial sessions beginning Jul. 24 at the GFA National Training Center.

The new program, with support from Japan Football Association, will run for 20 weeks from Jul. 31 to Dec. 15, featuring six boys divisions and three girls divisions. The 2017 program and the open trial sessions are free-of-charge for the players, and only a maximum of 16 athletes for each of the nine divisions will be selected, among other changes from previous years.

“As a result of a recent Technical and Development Strategic Plan Workshop held last month in collaboration with a variety of stakeholders and with the support of the GFA Executives, we’ve fine-tuned programs and their objectives for our elite football athletes, including the National Academy,” said Belinda Wilson, GFA Technical Director.

Baker, Damian, Besagar recognized with Academy honors

[December 2, 2016 - Harmon, Guam] Gavin Baker, Kalle Damian, and Ashley Besagar were recently recognized by United Airlines Guam Football Association National Academy directors as Players and Coach of the Cycle, respectively, for the program’s final cycle of 2016 with awards presented by Jamaican Grill.

“I've worked with several players in my career as a coach and Gavin is one of those players for whom I have higher aspirations,” said Dominic Gadia, Academy Director. “He may be small in stature, but in this sport, technique and creativity triumph over physique. Gavin has so much skill that he can get himself out of situations against bigger, faster, and multiple opponents. Players like Gavin have all the potential in the world and I hope that we as coaches can continue to help him develop.

“Gavin is a player you want to see play at the highest level possible and he is amongst a generation of very talented players who will represent Guam well in the future,” Gadia added.

Perez, Halili, and Healy recognized by Academy coaches

[June 28, 2016 - Harmon, Guam] Beau Perez, Jodee Halili, and Shane Healy were recently recognized by United Airlines Guam Football Association National Academy directors and staff as the program’s Players and Coach of the Cycle, respectively, for the first cycle of 2016 with awards presented by Jamaican Grill.

“Beau is one of our youngest outstanding players in our National Academy Program,” said Academy coach Shane Healy. “He is very quick to learn new skills and he is only adding to his arsenal of natural talent. Physically strong and balanced, Beau compliments his playing style with a great coachable attitude.”

Perez currently plays for the Sidekick SC in the Triple J Auto Group Robbie Webber Youth Soccer League and is an incoming fourth-grader at San Vicente Catholic School.

Toves, Guzman, Miyamoto UA Academy award winners

[August 17, 2016 - Harmon, Guam] Jacob Toves, Cadence Guzman, and Taro Miyamoto were recently recognized by United Airlines Guam Football Association National Academy directors as Players and Coach of the Cycle, respectively, for the program’s second cycle of 2016 with awards presented by Jamaican Grill.

“Jacob was chosen to receive this award after showcasing the mental strength and other attributes we hope all Academy players develop within our program,” said Dominic Gadia, Academy director. “We believe in good discipline on and off the field and Jacob is able to carry our values in both environments. Players such as Jacob are a rare breed; players mentally strong as him are sometimes the difference makers in the most crucial moments of important games and life situations. You may not hear much of him leading his teammates in training, but some of the best players in the world have led their teams through action and Jacob is fully capable of doing that if he continues to work hard in all that he does.”

Exchange between GFA and Saitama City, Japan likely

[June 3, 2016 - Saitama City, Japan] In an effort to further strengthen Guam’s football development and cultural education through football, Guam Football Association President Richard K. Lai recently met with Hayato Shimizu, mayor of Saitama City, Japan to negotiate an athletic and cultural exchange program.

“We had a very constructive meeting in Saitama City and soon, players from both Saitama City and Guam will be able to participate in exchange programs,” Lai said. “The overall vision of the exchange program is to provide opportunities for football development, while providing educational and cultural opportunities, as well. Youth from both Guam and Saitama City will benefit from the program and we hope that those who participate will develop lifelong friendships based on their common passion for the sport of football.
