NAPA Rovers back in top spot in Budweiser men's soccer

[January 10, 2017 - Harmon, Guam] New league-leaders NAPA Rovers will look to retain their top spot in the Budweiser Soccer League Premier Division in the team’s next match against No. 3 Quality Distributors 7 p.m. Saturday at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

Defending champions Rovers took back the No. 1 spot in league standings with a 5-1 victory over the previously undefeated Guam Shipyard team in the teams’ first fixture following the December holiday break on Jan. 7, according to the latest league statistics released by the GFA Men’s Committee.

Marcus Lopez scored twice for the Rovers and teammates Evan Sandilands, Ashton Surber, and Jan Flores also scored. Tae Min Kim scored for Guam Shipyard.

For Surber in particular, not only did he help his team get back into first place in league standings, but his acrobatic bicycle kick goal off an assist from teammate Eddie Lee Lorenzo in the 35th minute catapulted him to the No. 1 spot in the division’s Golden Boot race and also led to a celebration along the touchline where he removed his jersey to reveal the message “Marry Me?” on his undershirt, as he got down on one knee and proposed to his now fiancée La’Kiesha Pereda.

Surber, with 12 goals for the season, moved past Shipyard’s Min Sung Choi in the Golden Boot Race, who now is in second place with 11 goals.

In Week 8’s other Premier Division match, Quality Distributors remain in the No. 3 spot with a 3-3 draw with the Bank of Guam Strykers FC. James Bush kicked in the eventual game-tying goal in the 88th minute off an assist from Joshua Pangelinan just inside the penalty box. Scott Leon Guerrero scored Quality’s other two goals. Scott Spindel scored twice for the Strykers and Clayton Mitchell also scored.

In the league’s Masters Division, which resumed Jan. 5, the NAPA Rovers Masters defeated Hyundai Family FC 5-1 led by Ian Lawton’s hat trick. Enrique Interian and Edgar Rojas also scored for the Rovers. Se Lim scored for Hyundai Family FC.

The Bank of Guam Strykers Masters defeated the IT&E Boonie Dawgs 5-1 with two goals each from Joel Punzalan and Thomas Pacileo. Rod Hidalgo also scored for the Strykers Masters. Manoucher Sabeti scored IT&E’s lone goal.

Gino’s FC earned a forfeit win over Big Blue Masters.

The Premier Division continues Saturday with the Rovers taking on Quality at 7 p.m. followed by Guam Shipyard against Haya United at 9 p.m. The Rovers-Quality match will be live streamed on www.sorensenmediagroup.com/reddragon
